SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is due in court Wednesday to defend the company’s proposed $69 billion takeover of video game maker Activision Blizzard against an attempt by federal regulators to block the deal.Nadella and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick are both scheduled to testify before U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley on the fourth day of a court hearing in San Francisco. The proceedings are likely to make or break what would be the most expensive acquisition in technology history. The hearing represents a major test of the FTC’s amped-up oversight of Big Tech under Chairperson Lina Khan, who has been outspoken about her belief that U.S. regulators were too lenient in past deals that helped increase the power of companies such as Amazon, Google and Facebook. The courtroom tussle with Microsoft comes six months after the FTC took Facebook owner Meta Platforms to court in Silicon Valley to try to stop a takeover of a virtual reality fitness c...Clayton Kershaw takes no-hitter into 6th, J.D. DENVER (AP) — Clayton Kershaw carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, J.D. Martinez homered twice to reach 300 for his career, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 on Tuesday night.Kershaw (10-4) gave up one hit and faced the minimum in six innings, throwing only 79 pitches. He struck out two and left with some discomfort.“Just didn’t feel great overall,” Kershaw said. “The last inning kind of got to me. Obviously not a lot of pitches, definitely should have gone deeper in the game. I feel bad about making the bullpen cover three. Just needed to come out right there.“I think I’m all right, I think I’ll be good for the next start but I was trying to do the right thing and I think I did. We’ll see tomorrow but for right now I don’t think it’s too serious.”Kershaw has been anchoring an injury-riddled rotation this year and his workload of late might have been a factor in him coming out early Tuesday night, manager Dave Roberts said.“We’ve pushed him the last few...Orioles’ offense sputters, homer hurts Tyler Wells in 3-1 loss to Reds

Orioles pitchers allowing solo home runs, in manager Brandon Hyde’s fully logical estimation, is not the worst-case scenario. Of course, he would overwhelmingly prefer they not give up home runs at all.He didn’t get his wish Tuesday, as a pair of home runs with the bases empty provided the margin in Baltimore’s 3-1 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds, evening the series between two of baseball’s most exciting young teams. Baltimore’s offense managed only three hits, two by Jordan Westburg in his second major league game, as right-hander Tyler Wells delivered another quality start but was handed the loss thanks to Matt McLain’s sixth-inning solo shot.“That’s baseball,” Wells said. The Orioles’ best offensive opportunity came minutes before the skies opened above Camden Yards for a second straight night, prompting a 1-hour, 43-minute delay. After the Orioles managed a run on three walks and Westburg’s two hits off Reds left-ha...Hundreds gather for candlelight vigil after Encinitas teen dies in e-bike crash

SAN DIEGO -- For the third month in a row house prices were on the rise in San Diego. The median home price for our region went up about a percent, now sitting at just over $812,000, according to data released by CoreLogic.“Not as high of an increase, but a steady increase just due to the fact that there is a lack of inventory," said FOX 5 real estate expert Ken Kaplan.Kaplan says people are forced to get competitive with so few homes on the market, but not every home is flying into escrow.“The increase in prices on areas that are introductory level in any particular zip code are moving fast, but the properties that are on the market longer are typically the ones that are the higher end of whatever zip code you’re looking in,” Kaplan said. Major studios drop out of Comic-Con: report Prices may be going up in recent months, but the good news is they’re still down more than 3% since last year. Rising interest rates are playing a big role in the overall decrease in prices and invento...As a lengthy legal battle ends, a Palestinian family braces for eviction from Jerusalem home

JERUSALEM (AP) — Few places in Jerusalem speak of the larger conflict being waged over the city more than the apartment of 68-year-old Nora Ghaith-Sub Laban. As the last remaining Palestinians in a building filled with Israeli settlers, the Ghaith-Sub Labans have battled Israeli attempts to evict them from their Old City home for over 45 years. That labyrinthine legal battle ended earlier this year, when the Israeli Supreme Court struck down the family’s final motion for an appeal. Now, Israeli authorities have ordered the eviction of Nora and her husband Mustafa to take place by July 13. That includes one of the biggest holidays of the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha, which began Tuesday night.“I can’t sleep, I can’t eat,” Nora said from the apartment where she was born in 1955. From the outside, with its rough-hewed stones flattered by brilliant sunlight and its windows overlooking the golden Dome of the Rock, the 200-year-old home in the heart of the Muslim Quarter is a Jerusa...Kevin Spacey faces sex assault trial in London on allegations over a decade old

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey is going on trial Wednesday in a London court on charges of sexually assaulting four men as long as two decades ago. Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in sex activity without consent. He could face a prison sentence if convicted.Spacey has said an acquittal in the case could revive a career that has largely been on ice since sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against the star who won his first Academy Award for supporting actor in “The Usual Suspects” in 1995.“There are people right now who are ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London,” Spacey said in a rare interview published this month in Germany’s Zeit magazine. He said the media had turned him into a “monster.”The charges involving men now in their 30s or 40s date from 2001 to 2013 — covering most of the decade when he lived in Britain and served as a...Thai court acquits 5 who were accused of blocking the queen’s motorcade during 2020 protests

BANGKOK (AP) — A court in Thailand on Wednesday acquitted a student activist and four other people of impeding the motorcade of the country’s queen during pro-democracy demonstrations in 2020, an offense that could have seen them sentenced to 16 years in prison or even the death penalty. The Bangkok Criminal Court verdict was rendered in a case brought under a little-used law that targets actions intended “to harm the liberty of the queen, the heir apparent and the regent.” Legal experts were unable to recall any previous prosecutions under the law.The verdict represented a rare legal victory for Thailand’s pro-democracy movement, which has often faced an uphill battle in the conservative courts, which are widely seen as representing a bulwark against political and social change. After the verdict was read, people in the courtroom clapped and cheered, as the smiling defendants hugged each other, and the judge had to call for order. The defendants thanked the court, with one, Ekac...Latest news
