TikTok CEO grilled by skeptical lawmakers on safety, content WASHINGTON (AP) — A nearly six-hour grilling of TikTok’s CEO by lawmakers brought the platform’s 150 million U.S. users no closer to an answer as to whether the app will be wiped from their devices.U.S. lawmakers on Thursday pressed Shou Zi Chew over data security and harmful content, responding skeptically during a tense committee hearing to his assurances that the hugely popular video-sharing app prioritizes user safety and should not be banned due to its Chinese connections. In a bipartisan effort to rein in the power of a major social media platform, Republican and Democratic lawmakers hurled questions on a host of topics, including TikTok’s content moderation practices, how the company plans to secure American data from Beijing, and its spying on journalists.Chew spent most of the hearing attempting to push back assertions that TikTok, or its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, are tools of the Chinese government. But he failed to answer uncomfortable questions about human right...

Audit report calls for more transparency from DC’s troubled 911 call center

Audit report calls for more transparency from DC’s troubled 911 call center D.C.’s embattled 911 call center needs to be more transparent with the public, particularly in incidents during which mistakes were made, to help regain public trust, auditor Kathy Patterson said Thursday.A new report, a second status update on how the Office of Unified Communications is faring in implementing recommendations from a 2021 audit, said that while the agency is making some progress, more transparency is needed. In making the call for additional accountability, Patterson released a 911 call from an October 2022 incident. The caller explained a roommate was on the floor and not responding to calls for his name. But over the two-plus minute conversation, the operator never asked if the person was breathing, Patterson said. As a result, it took 20 minutes for responders to arrive. The resident died of cardiac arrest.More DC News More Local NewsMore Government NewsIn the aftermath of the incident, according to a news release, the agency posted a “final report”...

Kane breaks Rooney’s England scoring record with goal No. 54 NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Harry Kane became England’s leading scorer of all time on Thursday — and his record-setting goal just had to come from the penalty spot.Kane tugged on his England jersey and roared with delight in an emotional celebration after converting a spot kick during the 2-1 win over Italy in European Championship qualifying. It was his 54th goal for the national team, one more than Wayne Rooney. And the nature of the goal wasn’t lost on the Tottenham striker.“It had to be a penalty, of course,” Kane said, a nod to him missing from the spot late in a 2-1 loss to France in the World Cup quarterfinals last year.Rooney scored his 53 England goals from 2003-2018. Kane made his England debut in 2015 and has reached the landmark having played 39 fewer games than his fellow striker.“I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick,” tweeted Rooney, who is still Manchester United’s record scorer. “Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry.”...

Brewlihan Mead Co. offers locally brewed mead in Broward I feel the need, the need for mead! The centuries-old elixir is making a comeback — yes, in the 21st century, and could it be sweeter than ever?! Alcoholic beverage investigator, and sweetheart Alex Miranda found out.So what is mead?Well, it’s essentially honey wine. Now, I don’t know about you, but I still miss that pure honey McDonald’s used to offer with their chicken nuggets, but this is a close second.A Broward brewery is turning out the good stuff for modern-day adventurers. The act of drinking mead has changed since the days of the vikings, but the ancient liquid hasn’t lost any of its appeal in these modern times.John Hoolihan: “Mead is a delicious drink that’s been around since medieval times. It’s one of the first known alcohols that has been created.”At Brewlihan Mead Company in Oakland Park, they’re filling your glass with top-shelf stuff — thanks to the bees.John Hoolihan: “Meadery is similar to a modern version ...

We can’t lose China, EU leaders say

We can’t lose China, EU leaders say BRUSSELS — European leaders are suddenly falling over each other to get to China.Amid growing concern that Chinese leader Xi Jinping is hardening his support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Thursday he will fly to Beijing for talks next week. Emmanuel Macron, the French president, will follow on a longer-planned trip on April 4. A succession of European Union leaders used a summit in Brussels to raise the alarm about China’s ostentatious backing for Vladimir Putin this week, warning that they could not stand by while Beijing and Moscow cement an alliance that risks tipping the world deeper into crisis. Their concerns followed Xi’s high-profile trip to the Russian capital, which shored up the position of his longstanding friend, Putin.During a private session in Brussels, Macron urged his colleagues to redouble their efforts to stop China from deepening its support for Russia’s invasion. “The French president underli...
