ST. LOUIS - Miles Mikolas will take the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day, and he'll draw the big assignment with a new contract. Mikolas has agreed to a two-year, $40 million with the Cardinals. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch was among the first to report on the extension. The Cardinals announced the extension and Opening Day nod for Mikolas on Friday afternoon. “We are extremely pleased to announce that Miles Mikolas will remain a Cardinal for the foreseeable future,” said Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. “Miles stands among the top pitchers in the game today, and has continued to provide a steady presence for us both in the rotation and inside the clubhouse. The team is also looking forward to Miles taking the ball for us on Opening Day next week at Busch Stadium.” Top Stories: St. Louis lauds female firefighters, but denies promotions Mikolas, who also started on Opening Day in 2019, has proven reliable over five seasons ...As Darren Yapi looks to make impact for U.S. U-20s, he’s hopeful it can spur on his form with Rapids

There are plenty of eyeballs watching Darren Yapi’s every move for the Colorado Rapids this season. For an 18-year-old who went from fetching balls on the sideline just a few years ago to starting for the Rapids up front, the attention is to be expected.Still, it’s hard for the center forward to grasp how fast his rise has been. An official was on the line to tell him he had been selected for the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team’s final camp with friendlies in Europe against France, England and Serbia over two weeks. With the FIFA Under-20 World Cup kicking off this spring (May 20-June 11), U.S. Soccer had to do its due diligence before making a final roster decision. Yapi checks many boxes national teams need: A true center forward with blazing speed, the 6-foot-2 Denver native earned national-team attention, but still can hardly believe i...Man Killed, Two Others Seriously Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Lone Tree Way [Antioch, CA]

By Stephen R. Groves | Associated PressWASHINGTON — House Republicans on Friday narrowly passed legislation that would fulfill a campaign promise to give parents a role in what’s taught in public schools. It has little chance in the Democrat-run Senate and critics said it would propel a far-right movement that has led to book bans, restrictions aimed at transgender students and raucous school board meetings across the country.Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. who made the Parents’ Bill of Rights Act a priority during the early weeks of his tenure, said Republicans were “keeping our promise, our commitment to America, that parents will have a say in their kids’ education.” The bill passed 213-208, with five Republicans — mostly members of the House Freedom Caucus — voting against it.It would require schools to publish course studies and a list of books kept in libraries, as well as affirm parents’ ability to meet with educators, speak at school boar...Newsom relaxes California drought rules

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday relaxed drought rules in California amid a winter season filled with atmospheric river storms, flooding and a massive Sierra Nevada snowpack — soaking conditions that followed three dry, grueling years that had been marked by water shortages, extreme wildfires and heat waves. At an appearance at a groundwater recharge project in Yolo County, Newsom announced the end of state regulations he put in place last March that required cities and water agencies to impose water restrictions such as limits on the number of days a week residents could water lawns and landscaping. The decision now will be up to each local area in the coming weeks and months about whether to drop those restrictions.“Are we out of the drought?” Newsom said. “Mostly. But not completely.”Due to brimming reservoirs and the big snow pack, the state Department of Water Resources also announced Friday that it will increase water deliveries through the State Water ...Woman left her AirPods on a plane after landing in San Francisco.
