Fifty years ago this month, classic-rock fans first heard Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s hit “Takin’ Care of Business.”The band is celebrating with its 50th anniversary “Back in Overdrive” tour that hits the East Coast in March, while founder Randy Bachman was just nominated on the shortlist of the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his work with The Guess Who and BTO. Voting is open until Dec. 27.“We’re getting offers to go anywhere, but we’ve been catching up on COVID shutdown gigs that were delayed two years,” Bachman told WTOP. “We’re catching up on all of those because a lot of people held onto their tickets. MILAN (AP) — Italian melodrama’s official recognition as a global cultural treasure was celebrated Thursday with La Scala’s season premiere of Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” an opera that hits hot-button topics of power and oppression. In keeping with a La Scala tradition of off-stage melodrama, the issue of who would occupy the royal box at the Milan opera house on opening night spawned a pre-performance kerfuffle. La Scala’s unions protested the institutional seat of honor going to Senate Speaker Ignazio La Russa in the absence of Italy’s president and premier. La Russa, a far-right politician whom the unions claim has not condemned Italy’s fascist past, sat in the front row of the adorned royal box with Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, a left-wing politician who invited 93-year-old senator-for-life and Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre to join him. Segre received warm applause from the audience before the curtain went up, and after the Italian anthem was played someone yelled, “Long li...

LONDON — In a strip-lit hearing room in central London this week, 1,353 days after his first COVID lockdown, Boris Johnson finally testified to the U.K.’s inquiry into the pandemic. The ex-prime minister’s allies believe he gave a competent account of himself to aid the inquiry — which he set up — and shore up his legacy. He spent more than a year preparing, and adopted a less combative tone than he often has in public appearances of late. Families of some of the 233,000 who died watched closely. There was just one issue.
