Dustin Johnson makes a crazy 8 at the US Open but crawls back into contention

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:38:19 GMT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dustin Johnson’s summary of the quadruple bogey he made that could be the difference between winning and losing the U.S. Open was succinct, matter-of-fact and, of course, ugly.“Chunked my bunker shot and then chunked the next one. Skulled the next one,” he said. “Everything that you could do wrong, I did wrong.”That 8 he took on the second hole Friday was as bad as it gets. The 4-under par he shot over the next 16 holes was a reason he could smile at least a little. Even with the snowman, Johnson shot an even-par 70 and finished the day at 6-under 134. That left him tied for fifth, four shots behind Rickie Fowler and grateful he didn’t let the four shots he lost on one single hole completely wreck his day.“I just tried to focus on, there were a lot of holes left,” Johnson said. “You just don’t try to push it. You know this course is tough, but if you can drive it in the fairway, be aggressive when you can, you can have some shots at birdie.”Johns...

Class 4A state baseball: East Ridge edges Rosemount 1-0 to earn second state title since 2019

East Ridge junior Max Arlich repeated the message to his teammates in the dugout throughout Friday’s Class 4A state championship game at CHS Field in St. Paul: “Just get one run, that’s all we need.”Arlich was his usual dominant self on the bump for the Raptors. But scoring Friday was easier said than done. Rosemount lefty Liam Bystol was equally up to the task, mixing up his three pitches with precision to keep East Ridge off balance. Both pitchers held the opposing offenses scoreless through six frames.East Ridge had its chances prior to that, but couldn’t quite muster that key hit. Bystol was able to strand runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Bystol induced a ground ball with a runner on second and two outs to get out of the frame. That grounder came off the bat of East Ridge outfielder Riley Schwellenbach. In the top of the seventh, Schwellenbach got his shot at redemption.East Ridge senior designated hitter Josep...
