By MEG KINNARD (Associated Press)COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday criticized former President Donald Trump for being too friendly to China during his time in office, while also warning that weak support for Ukraine would “only encourage” China to invade Taiwan. Haley, a Republican presidential candidate running against Trump, said in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute that Trump was “almost singularly focused” on the U.S.-China trade relationship but ultimately did “too little about the rest of the Chinese threat.”Specifically, Haley noted that Trump failed to rally U.S. allies “against the Chinese threat” and that he had congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China.“That sends a wrong message to the world,” Haley said. “Chinese communism must be condemned, never congratulated.”Haley’s comme...

A recent algae bloom has sickened animals on the Southern California coast, leading marine care centers to ask for help.In response, the Los Angeles Unified School District is stepping up to help a partner they've had since the 1980s.The district is providing the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro with temporary outdoor space. The newly available area allows the MMCC to treat more sea lions, as the emergency has created a need that outpaces the normal capacity, said MMCC CEO John Warner."We have 113 patients on site right now ... There are at least 75 animals on the beaches of L.A. County right now that are in need of care, and we are doing everything possible to provide the space to do just that," Warner said. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the sickened marine mammals can experience "dehydration, seizures and, if not treated, even death" unless a focus is placed on "expanding facility space, providing the conditions for these sea lions to be treated." While the LAUS...

‘Stabbed’ man was actually blasted with pressure washer, Folsom police say

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:38:27 GMT

Wounds that left a man covered in blood after a dispute at a Folsom shopping center were determined to have been made by a pressure washer, police said. The man was initially thought to have been stabbed. The fight between two men took place around 6 a.m. Monday outside a hotel near the Folsom Premium Outlet Mall. One man had been hired to clean the outside of a building with the pressure washer, of the type that blasts water through a long wand. The other man reportedly got in a dispute with him and tried to take the washer away, police said — and the cleaning employee then apparently let loose on him with the forceful spray.“I can confirm it was not a stabbing,” Folsom police Officer Matt Stone told TV station KOVR. “The pressure washer, because of the pressure coming from it, looks like it created puncture-type wounds.”A pressure washer used for medium-duty professional jobs emits water at about 2,000 pounds per square inch. That is about the same force...

NHL’s schedule-makers do Sharks no favors to start next season

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:38:27 GMT

The San Jose Sharks will open the 2023-24 regular season on Oct. 12 at home against the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights — and their early schedule doesn’t much easier from there. The Sharks will continue a homestand against the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 14, the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 17, and the Boston Bruins on Oct. 19. Those three teams, plus the Golden Knights, all won their respective divisions this past year and all finished within the top seven in the league’s overall standings. The Sharks’ grueling opening month then continues with a five-game, nine-day road trip with stops in Nashville, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, and Washington. The Sharks got off to a 0-5-0 start this past season and were never able to climb above a .500 points percentage. They’ll likely need to get off to a better start this season if they have any hope of ending a four-year playoff drought.Related ArticlesSan Jose Sharks | Erik Karlsson wi...
